Smart Couples Do This Before There Is a Problem
Premarital counseling is not remedial. It is the relationship equivalent of a pre-season training camp: a structured way to surface the conversations most couples do not have until they are arguments. Couples who invest in preparation before marriage consistently report stronger communication and satisfaction down the road, and they know where the pressure points are before the pressure arrives.
What You Will Actually Talk About
- Money. Spending styles, debt, savings, and who grew up with what beliefs about all three
- Conflict styles. How each of you fights, withdraws, and repairs, and what to do when those styles clash
- Family patterns. What you each absorbed from your parents' marriage, on purpose or not, plus in-laws and boundaries
- Expectations. Roles, careers, where you will live, and the assumptions neither of you has said out loud
- Children. Whether, when, how many, and how you each imagine parenting
- Intimacy and faith. Physical expectations, spiritual life, and the values you want your home built on
How It Works
Most couples complete premarital counseling in four to eight sessions with one of our couples-trained clinicians. Sessions are structured but personal: this is about your specific relationship, not a workbook lecture. Couples often tell us these were the best conversations they had all engagement.
Not Engaged Yet? Come Anyway
Seriously dating couples deciding whether to build a future together get just as much from the process. And if you are already married and wishing you had done this, couples counseling covers the same ground with tools matched to where you are now.
Premarital counseling is available at all five Water's Edge offices. Call (479) 621-0301 or request an appointment, and give the marriage the same attention as the wedding.
