Support for the Parent, Not Just the Child
Plenty of families come to us for a struggling child. Parenting counseling flips the lens: the sessions are for you, the parent, because changing how the adults respond is often the fastest way to change how a child behaves. It is practical, judgment-free, and tailored to your actual kid, not a hypothetical one from a parenting book.
What Parents Bring to Us
- Defiance, power struggles, and consequences that have stopped working
- Meltdowns and big feelings that hijack the whole household
- Parenting an anxious child, a grieving child, or a child with ADHD
- Screens, phones, and the nightly negotiation over both
- Co-parenting after divorce, including when the other house plays by different rules
- Blended family dynamics: stepparent authority, loyalty binds, and new-sibling friction
- The quieter stuff: parental burnout, guilt, and losing your temper more than you want to
How Parenting Counseling Works
You meet with a clinician who works with children and families every week. Together you map what is happening at home, understand what drives your child's behavior, and build specific responses: what to say in the moment, what to stop rewarding by accident, and how to repair after hard days. When it helps, we add work with your child directly, including play therapy for younger kids, or bring everyone together through family counseling.
For parents of young children, ask about filial therapy, where we coach you to run short, child-centered play sessions at home. It strengthens the relationship and puts the progress in your hands, not just the therapist's.
You Do Not Have to Wait for a Crisis
Parenting counselors are available at all five Water's Edge offices across Northwest Arkansas and El Dorado. Call (479) 621-0301 or request an appointment. Asking for help with parenting is not an admission of failure; it is what good parents do when the job gets bigger than the manual they never got.
