What Is Individual Counseling?
Individual counseling (also called individual therapy or talk therapy) is a private, one-on-one partnership between you and a licensed mental health professional. Together you explore what's weighing on you, understand the patterns behind it, and build practical skills to change it.
At Water's Edge, the relationship comes first. Research consistently shows that the strongest predictor of progress in therapy is the trust between client and counselor, so we take real care in matching you with someone you'll feel comfortable with, and we make it easy to switch if the fit isn't right.
What We Help With
- Anxiety & panic, racing thoughts, constant worry, physical tension, avoidance
- Depression, persistent sadness, low energy, loss of interest, hopelessness
- Trauma & PTSD, processing difficult experiences safely and at your pace
- Grief & loss, the death of a loved one, divorce, or other major losses
- Stress & burnout, work pressure, caregiver fatigue, overwhelm
- Self-esteem & identity, confidence, boundaries, knowing what you want
- Life transitions, new city, new job, new baby, empty nest, retirement
What to Expect in Your First Session
Your first appointment is a conversation, not an interrogation. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what you'd like to be different, and a bit about your history. Together you'll set goals and sketch a plan. Most clients meet weekly or every other week to start, then taper as things improve.
